If you’re receiving the above error ( or similar ), the issue is most likely related to the version of the extension you are using. On occasion, Google changes aspects of how Gmail looks or how it is loaded. These changes can cause the Bananatag extension to error. We release updates to the extension as soon as we are able to detect a change in Gmail. If you are using Chrome, updates to the extension are automatic ( may require a forced refresh), but if you are using Firefox you’ll have to download the new version of the extension.

How to Test Opens
Testing Opens is usually the first thing tested to make sure that the service works. Here is some information on testing so you know what to expect.
1. Track your Email normally.
2. Open the email on a different device, or in a different browser from the one you sent the email from. Opening the email from a mobile device is a great way to test Opens.
Some Emails Are Not Being Tracked In Outlook
Although rare, in some instances certain settings aren’t able to be set during the install which can cause Opens to not be tracked for Replies, but work fine for New Messages.
If you are experiencing this issue, follow the below steps to resolve it.
1. Click Options, Settings in the Bananatag.
2. Un-check the box “Track Email Opens”
3. Click Apply
4. Go back into the Settings.
5. Check the box “Track Email Opens”
6. Click Apply
Opens for replies should now be tracked.
How Opens Work
We use the same technology as mass-email-marketing companies to track our Opens. This is achieved by inserting a small image in the message or Tracking Pixel into the message. When the image is downloaded you get an Open.
Some important things about Opens
1. If the person opening the message has images disabled you will not get an open. This is set to default in some email programs due to abuse by Spammers.
2. Sending an email to yourself and opening it in the same browser will not trigger an Open. When you track an email Bananatag sets a cookie so that you don’t receive Opens from yourself (When going through Sent Items for example). When Testing Opens, it’s best to open from a different device than the one you sent from.
3. If the recipient uses Plain Text email you will not get an open. While most people do not use Plain Text email, some people and corporations will, so it’s important to keep that in mind.
4. Some email programs may re-download the content multiple times while the message is open. Some peoples email setup may also cause them to reopen your message multiple times. While we have systems to minimize this you might find you want to change your Notification Options if you are experiencing this.
Notification Options
Depending on how you use Bananatag and what information is important to you, you may want to change your Notification Options. Here’s how.

How to use CRM Sync
You can sync your emails to most CRMs with our Gmail extension automatically. This uses the unique email address many CRMs provide to use in the BCC field of an email. We save you this step by allowing you to insert the unique CRM email address into your Bananatag settings and then simply select a checkbox when you want that email synced to your CRM.
1. Find your CRM User’s BCC Dropbox Email Address
Here are some links to help you find your BCC address with the following solutions.
2. Enter the BCC email address into your Bananatag settings
You can find this setting under Account > Settings > CRM Sync. Click here to go Account settings.
3. Make sure ‘CRM Sync’ is checked when sending an email form Gmail or Google Apps
When have CRM Sync checked and you press Send our Gmail extension will check to see if you’ve entered a BCC Dropbox email address in your account settings. If you have, it will automatically BCC the email to that address.

How Do I Enable the CRM Checkbox?

Click the Bananatag button at the top of the page, then select ‘Extension Settings’
Ensure that CRM Integration is set to Enabled.
If it is already enabled try disabling it and re-enabling.
Once Enabled, you should be able to click the CRM box in your messages.
Send Direct with Gmail
If using .btag.it with Gmail or Google Apps, you’ll need to follow the steps below after setting up Send Direct.
When your first email is tracked with .btag.it and Bananatag connects to your server, Gmail will detect the application attempting to connect to your account and will block the attempt.
In order to send the email Bananatag will need to be added to the list of allowed applications in your Gmail account. Here are the steps;
1. Log in to your Gmail account that you are sending your .btag.it emails from.
2. Navigate to this link https://accounts.google.com/DisplayUnlockCaptcha
3. With the above page still open and within 10 minutes, send another email with .btag.it from that account.
That should be all you need to do! By sending the email with .btag.it the application connects the account while Gmail listens for applications to allow in future. Once added there should be no need to repeat this process as long as the correct password is being used to connect.
Setting up Send Direct
To set up Send Direct, log into your Bananatag Account and click Account > Settings from the left menu. Then click the tab “Send Direct”.
Your username will already be filled out with your email address. In some environments (like certain Exchange setups) your username may only be the first part of your email. For example, your email may be john@bananatag.com, but your domain username is just john. If this is the case click No Domain Required. If you’re not sure about this, check with your administrator.
Then type in your email password and click Test & Save Settings. Bananatag will then attempt to confirm the settings you have entered and will let you know if it is successful.
Manually Enter SMTP Settings
For most large email providers, Bananatag already has the outgoing server information that it needs to sync your accounts, but in some cases you may need to provide your outgoing server, and type of encryption used. If you’re unsure about these settings, check with your network administrator.

Two Steps for resolving authentication issues with Hotmail and Outlook.com
If you are experiencing an error either syncing (using SendDirect) or sending email through Bananatag, follow these steps to get up and running.
Types of Errors
Sending through Bananatag’s Email Relay or .btag.it Service
You’ve either received a message telling you that we were unable to authentic your account or you’ve received a vague error stating:
In both cases, the solution is the same.

Make sure that it lines up with the time you sent or tried to sync your account.
Using Google Analytics with Bananatag for Teams
Enabling Google Analytics for your Teams account will add Google’s campaign URL tracking code to your links. This will let you see how recipients interact with your website from the emails you’ve tracked with Bananatag.
The tracking data is broken down by team member allowing you to see how each team member is influencing web traffic behavior.
Setup
To setup Google Analytics for your team, log into your Bananatag account. From there navigate to Team > Settings > Google Analytics (requires admin privileges).
Enter your website address and that’s it!
Bananatag will now add campaign tracking for Google Analytics to your tracked emails.
Campaign URL Parameters
Google Analytics requires parameters to identify where the visit originated came from so we need to provide this information.
These details will be added to your tracked URLs by Bananatag:
- Campaign Name: Bananatag
- Campaign Source: User Name
- Campaign Medium: User Email Address
These parameters are added automatically by Bananatag and cannot be changed. You can use these values to create reports and drill downs in Google Analytics.
Viewing Google Analytics
To view this data in your Google Analytics account log in and from the left menu click Aquisition > Campaigns.
If any recipients have clicked on your links during the time frame you have selected, then you should see a campaign named “Bananatag” in this view.
If you click on the Bananatag campaign you will see a breakdown of each of your team members and the visits that resulted from their emails.
In this standard view you can see details such as Bounce Rate, Pages/Visit and even conversion and eccomerce data. Use this powerful data to see beyond the click and to how recipients are engaging with your site.
Recipient Missing Links not Resolved.
If you receive this message when trying to track an email it’s indicating that it was not able to detect any recipients in the email. There are generally only two causes.
There are no emails in the To: or CC:
When sending to a distribution list, many users will use the sender as the To: (essentially sending to themselves) and add distribution lists to the BCC.
An Error
After attempting to track an email where this error is received, more detailed information about the error will help us identify what the cause is.
To send us the info, Click Options – Help – Send Feedback in the Bananatag addin and then send the email.
